Is Radon Dangerous?

Yes. Radon is a proven human carcinogen and the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. The evidence linking radon exposure to lung cancer is well-established through decades of research on both miners exposed to high radon concentrations and residential populations. The risk is real, quantifiable, and, unlike most cancer risks, directly reducible through mitigation.

How Risk Is Calculated

Radon risk is cumulative and dose-dependent. The EPA expresses risk in terms of lifetime lung cancer deaths per 1,000 people exposed continuously to a given concentration.

At 4 pCi/L, the action level, a non-smoker has approximately a 7 in 1,000 lifetime risk of developing lung cancer from radon; a smoker's risk at the same level is approximately 62 in 1,000 due to the synergistic effect of smoking and radon. At 20 pCi/L, non-smoker risk rises to approximately 36 in 1,000. By comparison, the risk of drowning in the United States is about 2 in 1,000 per lifetime.

Radon and Smoking: A Dangerous Combination

The combination of smoking and radon exposure is far more dangerous than either alone. Tobacco smoke appears to impair the lung's ability to clear radioactive particles, increasing the time they spend in contact with lung tissue. The EPA estimates that smokers at the 4 pCi/L action level have about nine times the lung cancer risk of non-smokers at the same level. Former smokers also face elevated risk compared to lifelong non-smokers. For households with smokers, radon testing and mitigation become even more important.

How Long Does It Take for Radon to Cause Harm?

Radon-induced lung cancer typically develops over many years of chronic exposure, not hours or days. Short-term, high-level exposures (such as a brief visit to a high-radon space) contribute very little to lifetime risk compared to continuous low-level exposures. This is why long-term radon testing, measurements over 90 days or more, provides a more meaningful picture of actual exposure than short-term tests. However, the cumulative nature of risk also means that reducing radon levels at any point in life meaningfully reduces future risk.

The Good News: Mitigation Works

Unlike many environmental carcinogens, elevated indoor radon levels can be reliably reduced through sub-slab depressurization systems, the standard mitigation approach. EPA data indicates that properly installed mitigation systems typically reduce radon levels by 50% to 99%. Post-mitigation testing confirms the reduction. For most homes with elevated radon, the investment in a mitigation system, typically $800 to $2,500, provides decades of protection.
