Because the fibers are far lighter than ordinary dust, they settle slowly and unevenly. That means the air in a disturbed space can remain hazardous long after the activity that released them has stopped.
Why They Stay Up So Long
Asbestos fibers are extremely thin and lightweight relative to their length. Instead of dropping straight down like heavier particles, they drift on the smallest air currents. Any air movement, foot traffic, HVAC systems, fans, or opening a door, can re-suspend fibers that had begun to settle. That effectively restarts the clock. This is why a contaminated area is not 'safe' simply because visible dust has settled.
