The running cost is the electricity a fan uses while it operates, which is what the tool above estimates, typically a few dollars a month. The purchase cost is what the hardware and labor run: the radon fan unit itself is generally about $150 to $400 depending on the model and the suction your system needs, and a full fan replacement usually lands around $300 to $600 installed, because the existing pipe and routing are reused. How Radon Fan Energy Use Is Calculated
Electricity use is straightforward: energy (kilowatt-hours) = watts × hours ÷ 1,000. Because a radon fan runs continuously, that is watts × 24 × 365 ÷ 1,000. A typical 70-watt fan therefore uses about 613 kilowatt-hours per year. Multiplying that by your electricity rate gives the annual cost, and dividing by twelve gives the monthly cost. At a South-region average of about $0.11 per kilowatt-hour, a 70-watt fan costs roughly $67 per year, or about $5.62 per month.
What It Costs to Run a Radon Fan by Region
Because the only variable beyond wattage is your electricity rate, operating cost tracks closely with where you live. Using a 70-watt fan as the example: at a South average near $0.11/kWh the cost is about $67 per year; in the Midwest near $0.13/kWh about $80; in the West near $0.14/kWh about $86; and in the higher-rate Northeast near $0.20/kWh about $123 per year. Ways to Lower Your Radon Fan Operating Cost
The biggest lever is fan sizing: a correctly sized system uses the smallest fan that still holds radon below the action level, so an over-powered fan wastes electricity for no benefit. Which fan that is depends on what sits under your slab and how your pipe is routed, and our fan sizing calculator works through it. Beyond that, energy-efficient fan models, a well-sealed sub-slab or sub-membrane system, and good pipe routing all reduce the work the fan has to do. Turning the fan off to save money is not recommended. Radon levels climb back up within hours, undoing the protection the system provides.
